The Difference Between The Performance Of Explosion-Proof Motors

Motor efficiency is one of the key performance indicators used to evaluate the overall performance of explosion-proof motors. The average efficiency of YB3 series explosion-proof motors is approximately 3 percentage points higher than that of YB2 series motors, which is why they are classified as high-efficiency motors. The main benefits of using YB3 series high-efficiency motors are as follows:

  1. Lower energy losses and higher operating efficiency, resulting in significant energy savings;
  2. High-quality iron-core materials that help reduce no-load losses;
  3. Lower energy losses, less heat generation and a lower temperature rise, helping extend the service life of the motor;
  4. Lower vibration and operating noise;
  5. A lower temperature rise that helps extend the service life of the bearings;
  6. Strong overload capacity.

Explosion-proof motors are used extensively across a wide range of industries. Based on currently foreseeable technological developments, there is still no practical product that can convert electrical energy into mechanical energy without the use of a motor. Therefore, electric motors remain irreplaceable.

However, the motor industry generally operates on relatively low profit margins. Investment in the research, development and industrialization of high-efficiency technologies places considerable financial pressure on individual manufacturers. This is one of the main reasons why China’s research and development of high-efficiency, energy-saving explosion-proof motor technologies has historically lagged behind that of developed countries.

Compared with conventional explosion-proof motors, high-efficiency explosion-proof motors can improve operating efficiency by approximately 2%–7%. Electric motors account for nearly half of total electricity consumption. Assuming that the widespread use of high-efficiency explosion-proof motors improves operating efficiency by 4%, China could save approximately 54.5 billion kWh of electricity, reduce coal consumption by approximately 18.4 million tonnes, and cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 48.46 million tonnes and sulfur dioxide emissions by approximately 160,000 tonnes.

Taking an 11 kW, four-pole motor operating over a six-year period as an example, assume that the motor runs for 3,000 hours per year, the commercial electricity price is approximately RMB 0.80 per kWh, and the additional initial investment required for a high-efficiency motor is RMB 600. The efficiency of a conventional explosion-proof motor is approximately 88%, while that of a high-efficiency explosion-proof motor reaches approximately 91.3%.

High-efficiency explosion-proof motors generally cost around 30% more than conventional explosion-proof motors. Nevertheless, although the initial investment increases by RMB 600, the annual electricity cost saving can reach approximately RMB 1,093.

Based on the project’s estimated annual sales revenue of RMB 50 million and an expected annual production capacity of 250,000 kW, the project is expected to save approximately RMB 25 million in electricity costs each year. This is equivalent to an annual electricity saving of approximately 31.25 million kWh, a reduction of approximately 10,500 tonnes in coal consumption, and reductions of approximately 27,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and 90 tonnes of sulfur dioxide emissions.

The statistical data clearly demonstrate that developing high-efficiency, energy-saving explosion-proof motors can improve motor efficiency and reduce energy consumption. This has significant strategic importance for national energy conservation and can also generate substantial economic and environmental benefits.

The development and promotion of high-efficiency, energy-saving technologies, equipment and products will help achieve breakthroughs in core industry technologies and improve the overall level of motor energy efficiency. As China continues to strengthen its energy-conservation and emissions-reduction policies and implement mandatory efficiency standards for explosion-proof motors, conventional explosion-proof motors will gradually be replaced by high-efficiency, energy-saving models. The market outlook for the industry is therefore extremely promising.
